This is an example of how to pray. When the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, He told them to pray this way.
If we take a look at Matthew 6:6-8 we will see that when we pray we shouldn't make a big deal about it in front of other people so they can see us praying and think, "Wow, that person must be a good Christian because He/She is praying for so and so."
We also see in the Scriptures that we don't have to go overboard either, but rather just keep it simple and sincere. God knows what you need before you ever even think of asking. Here it is like Jesus told it, "When you pray, go into your inner room, close the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."
God is pretty cool, don't you agree? He's not going to ding you if your prayers are not formal and poetic like the Psalms. He's also not going to make you keep begging for something. God is just waiting for you to seek Him as the answer for all of your life and ask for the gifts he has prepared for you.
