"Who Is God?"
By Alina Bentley
God was everywhere before the world even existed. He knew how many hairs were going to be on your head before you were even born and what you were going to do. He even knew what you were going to think, or, if you already exist, what you are thinking now.
God is our creator. He is exalted, eternal and infinite, the world's sovereign and judge. What we believe about God is the most important thing about us. Our belief or lack of it inevitably translates itself into our actions and attitudes.
Some people think of God as a pure mathematical mind. Others see him as a shadowy superhuman. Still others see God as a ball of fire to which we, as sparks of life, will ultimately be united or as a celestial policeman. A few think of him as a sentimental grandfather of the sky.
However, it's obvious that if there is a God, his existence and his nature do not depend on what anyone thinks about him. God is unchangeable. He never changes, and when he seems different it is because we have changed. In doing so, we have come into a different relationship towards him.
God is omnipresent, meaning that he is fully present everywhere. He is also omniscient, which means he knows everything, including our own thoughts. He is all powerful! When you are thinking of doing something evil, you are being tempted by Satan, but God's Word promises that with every temptation He will make sure that we have a way to escape, or resist.
When we want to know if something is right or not, the first place we need to look is in the Bible to see what, if anything, it says to guide us. If there is nothing to help there, then we need to consider what our conscience is saying, but even that is not always reliable because we are sinful people living in a fallen world. Therefore, it is also good to consult with other Christian friends.
God does not have a physical body. When we speak about him using human expressions, we are using human words to try to describe and help us understand someone who is far greater than mankind.
God is our all-powerful, all-wise, infinite, eternal, changeless father and king. He is personal, and in a strange way we can understand something about God by looking at ourselves, because although we are sinful and fallen, we were still made in the image of God.
However, what is created cannot be of a higher order than its creator. God is a person and we are persons, which means communication between him and us is possible, but only because He has chosen to reveal Himself to us through Jesus and his Word, the Bible.
"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." ~ Romans 1:20.
In the end we need to have faith that he exists, and that "He is real and he rewards those who truly want to find him." ~ Hebrews 11:6
