"Walls - Denominationalism"
By Dj
Sometimes we wear our church denomination like a badge, ever so proud of the place we belong to. You might be Presbyterian, Assembly of God, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, or some other denomination. But does it really matter?
I saw a skit performed one time at the campus ministry I go to. There was a chair center stage. Different people carried signs describing themselves and tried placing them in the chair. There were skaters, long-haired freaky people, preps, etc. Then they began placing signs of their church denominations, pushing other signs off the chair. After awhile, everyone made new signs saying 'ME.' They fought to place them on the chair. Then someone came along and threw all the signs on the floor and placed one that said 'Jesus' on the chair. All the sign-bearers bowed down and began praying.
I think that was one of the really big things that led me to stay at that campus ministry. They were so about Jesus. He was the center of their focus. In fact, during praise and worship time the rest of the year, they kept that chair out with the Jesus sign on center stage. The Band played off to the side because they weren't the ones we were to be focusing on. Jesus should be our focus.
And so it is with all Christians. Jesus should be our focus, and we shouldn't let the little theological beliefs get in the way. If you were an outsider looking into the world of Christianity, what would you see? I would see a lot of differences, and no real unity. Who wants to join a religion like that? Christianity has become a religion where many of the members dislike each other and get caught up on the little differences. That's not appealing to an outsider at all! Since our mission on earth is to get as many people to realize that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, we need to work together!
Remember, the only eternal question is whether you have put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. When you get down to it, Calvinism vs. Arminianism doesn't matter. Whether you're dunked or sprinkled doesn't matter. Whether you believe the elements of Communion actually become the flesh of Jesus or not doesn't matter. Whether you believe in the Pre-Tribulation, Mid-Tribulation, or Post-Tribulation Second Coming doesn't matter either. As I said before, what matters is where salvation comes from. Do you want to know Jesus?
Acts 4:32 says, 'All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.' This is not only my vision for YouthFire, but also for all Christians. I think it would be great if our collective focus were on Jesus. Drop the disputes about denominationalism and focus on Jesus.
